Camp Fire investigation leads to another area away from Pulga

CONCOW — A roadblock Wednesday outside Concow was related to Cal Fire’s investigation into where and how the deadly Camp Fire started, Cal Fire-Butte County Chief Darren Read said Thursday.
The roadblock, which was on Concow Road somewhere between Mountain Pine Lane and Rim Road, was manned by security guards Wednesday afternoon.

Read said he would make an announcement related to the closure Thursday evening.  Read said Cal Fire’s probe of the Camp Fire’s cause and origin, which sparked Nov. 8 and has become the state’s deadliest and most destructive wildfire ever, has led investigators in multiple directions, but he would not provide more details about his announcement.

A cause of the fire has not been released. The roadblock outside Concow is several miles away, as the crow flies, on a ridge far above the Camp Fire’s reported origin near Pulga “under the high-tension power lines” across the Feather River from Poe Dam, according to firefighter radio transmissions reviewed by Bay Area News Group.

PG&E’s president, Geisha Williams, previously told E-R reporter Laura Urseny that there was a power outage about 15 minutes before the Camp Fire was first reported, and a later aerial patrol observed damage in the area of transmission lines.

Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said Wednesday that PG&E is cooperating with fire investigators, but it was not clear whether the utility’s transmission tower caused the fire.  Ramsey said fire investigators hoped to wrap up their investigation Wednesday of the initially reported Camp Fire ignition point near Pulga. The District Attorney’s Office was involved in the investigation in case criminal charges are recommended by Cal Fire.

Read said Cal Fire is conducting a thorough investigation but could not speak to its specifics.

A U.S.P.S. truck was completely destroyed this afternoon in Walnut Creek.

Randy sent the photo, and also says “This happened in Rudgear Estates in Walnut Creek just a little while ago. Postal carrier safe. Witnesses say he removed the mail from the burning truck and continued the route. Truck reportedly malfunctioned when he started the engine.”

Claycordians, we now have an updated U.S.P.S. motto: “Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail….nor fire shall keep the postmen from their appointed rounds.”

WALNUT CREEK -- A 44-year-old woman died Saturday morning in a vehicle crash in unincorporated Contra Costa County, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The accident occurred about 6:30 a.m. when the Walnut Creek woman was driving a 2011 Nissan Versa eastbound on Treat Boulevard, west of Walnut Creek, Officer J. Johnson said.

For an unknown reason, she veered off the roadway and crashed into a light pole on the southeast corner of Treat Boulevard, near Cherry Lane, Johnson said.
The woman, who has not been named, was taken by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where she was pronounced dead, he said.
The accident is under investigation, authorities said.

Police said they do not know the speed at which she was driving or if alcohol or drugs played a role.
Anyone with information about the accident can call California Highway Patrol at 925-646-4980 or 707-551-4100.

Pleasant Hill: Multiple fires gut DVC police building

PLEASANT HILL — An arson likely destroyed the police services building at Diablo Valley College early Monday, investigators said.
“We had two (fires) on the outside and one on the inside in the lobby,” said Contra Costa County Fire Marshal Richard Carpenter. “Probably, the whole building will have to be replaced.”
The fire was reported at 2:25 a.m. in the 1,700-square-foot building located in the southeast corner of the campus by Parking Lot 2. The school runs along Golf Club Road.
The Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded with four engines, one truck and about 20 firefighters.
Carpenter said the fire destroyed the lobby and the rest of the building sustained heavy heat and smoke damage.
DVC spokeswoman Chrisanne Knox said police services, an actual law enforcement department that patrols several campuses within the Contra Costa Community College District, is based at Diablo Valley.
The department has about 20 sworn officers — five to six of whom work at DVC — four higher-ranking officers including a chief, about four dispatchers, two parking officers and 10 to 15 student aides.
On an interim basis, the police department will operate out of a conference room in the business and foreign language department.
“It was designed as an emergency command center and has all the (required communications equipment),” Knox said.
The college is looking at several other locations for a longer-term temporary home for the department.
She said the cost of the damages to the building has not been determined and it is not clear if it will be knocked down or restored.
“There was very little that was salvageable,” she said.
The criminal investigation is being led by the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office, Knox said, with Pleasant Hill police and the school district police department assisting.
Carpenter said fire investigators are still trying to determine what kind of fuel was used by the arsonist.

ALAMO -- A man who died after he was trapped in a burning vehicle over the weekend has been identied as an Alamo man.

The California Highway Patrol said 60-year-old Michael Sevenau died after the silver 2000 Jaguar he was driving went off the road, hit a tree and caught fire. The wreck happened just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

An investigation showed the Jaguar was traveling east on Stone Valley Road and wound up in the west side of the road before colliding first with some mailboxes, CHP Officer John Fransen said. The Jaguar then spun around, broke through a wooden fence and down a dirt embankment before hitting the tree.

Police are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the wreck. Investigators have not yet determined if Sevenau suffered a medical issue while he was behind the wheel.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.
