The First Last Murder/Death/Accidental/Passing/Suspicious/Cold Case

Connecting persons, events and names together - some names for reference no pain intended, some as marker to the real story

Post from online record if possible John Daniel Van Voorhis 65, Born in Oakland, June 18, 1939. It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Daniel Van Voorhis on March 8, 2005, lifelong resident of the bay area and most recently residing in San Francisco. Dan died peacefully at California Pacific Medical Center with his children at his side from heart and liver failure. Dan grew up in Walnut Creek, where he graduated from Los Lomas High School, before marrying his high school sweet heart Karen Judith Wacker in 1960. Dan graduated from San Francisco State University, then attended Boalt Hall at the University of California at Berkeley where he earned his Juris Doctorate. Dan joined his brother Thomas's law firm of Campbell, Van Voorhis and Bybee in Walnut Creek in 1965, before opening his own firm in 1975 - Van Voorhis and Skaggs with long-time friend and partner Sanford M. Skaggs. Specializing in real estate and local government law, the firm of Van Voorhis and Skaggs was eventually purchased by and merged with the firm of McCutchen, Doyle, Brown and Enersen in 1984 (today Bingham McCutchen). Dan's efforts on behalf of his main client Blackhawk helped earn him an equity position in the company in 1975; the post of general counsel also in 1975, and in 1983 he was named as president of Blackhawk Corporation. In this capacity he spearheaded the development of the two largest real estate projects ever constructed in Northern California at that time, Blackhawk and Canyon Lakes. After his retirement in 1990, Dan devoted his tremendous energies and resources to establishing professional soccer in the US and founded, owned and operated the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks from 1988 to 1994. He was honored by Honda for his contribution to professional soccer in America in 1993, and was inducted to the California Association North Soccer Hall of Fame in August of 2004. Remembered by all who knew him as a patriotic, loyal and immensely determined individual his exceptional intellect, vision, and ideas left a significant imprint on the landscape of Contra Costa County. Known by his family as a loving, generous and devoted man - his lasting impression as a charismatic and humourous person will long be recalled by all who knew him. He is survived by his children Bekki Van Voorhis Gilbert, Kerry Malzahn, and John Daniel Van Voorhis, Jr. and by their mother Karen Judith Van Voorhis; his four grandchildren Nathaniel and Nicole Gilbert and Kaila and Eric Malzahn; and his five siblings Joann Hanna, G. Thomas Van Voorhis, Mari Edd, Barbara Van Voorhis Molloy and David E. Van Voorhis. A private memorial service for family and friends will be held on April 7th at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his memory be made to Boalt Hall, University of California, Berkeley, California 9472-7200. A burglary crew stole $1.65+ million from Contra Costa’s most affluent community. And so far, they’ve gotten away with it

Fur coats, jewelry, cash, stolen

PUBLISHED:  | UPDATED:

DANVILLE — The first burglary happened on Nov. 3, 2016, when a group of bandits snuck into a house in the 4200 block of Silver Meadow Court, in Blackhawk, and made off with $180,000 in jewelry.
The last one happened 12 months later, when they entered a home at nearby Cypress Court around 1 p.m., and took an unknown amount of jewels.
There were 16 burglaries in total. Sometimes the perpetrators stashed the stolen goods or safes in the home’s garbage bin, and rolled it to a getaway car. Other times they acquired a golf cart and drove it through a country club that bordered by the burglarized home, to blend in with their surroundings.
Every time, they got away with it, and they still haven’t been caught.

The burglary spree, which has not been previously reported on, targeted homes in the section of Contra Costa County with the highest property values: Blackhawk and Danville, where the median home price is well above $1 million and nearly everyone has at least a burglar alarm, if not home security cameras.
Police are still investigating the case; detectives have reviewed security footage, interviewed numerous witnesses and even tried to pinpoint the burglars through GPS. So far, no one has been charged, police said.
The same three people were seen on video in at least five of the burglaries, and police suspect all 16 are related. They typically entered the house through a back sliding glass door, often using a rug or outdoor furniture cushion to muffle the sound of breaking glass. The burglars would then head for the bedrooms, targeting jewelry boxes, safes and clothing drawers for stashes of cash and other valuables, police said.
Most of the burglaries occurred on properties next to the Blackhawk Country Club. The lowest take was $10,000 from one home. The highest single caper amounted to a $500,000 loss, according to court records.
In one June 2017 burglary in the 5400 block of Blackhawk Drive, $215,000 in purses and fur coats were stolen. In another burglary two months later, in the 4500 block of Kingswood Drive, the thieves made off with $500,000 in jewelry, bonds and gold bars stolen from an unlocked safe.
In November 2017, the burglars hit five homes, grabbing with a whopping $265,000 in cash from one residence, $22,000 in jewelry from another and $13,000, as well as a handgun, from a third. In two others, packages were taken, along with an unspecified amount of jewelry.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office says anyone with tips on the burglary spree can call the agency’s investigation division at 925-313-2621, email tips@so.cccounty.us or call 866-846-3592 to leave an anonymous voice message.

Missing Person:Dan Van Voorhis

By AUTUMN JOHNSON
Almost four years after a Castro Valley man disappeared from his home, his family is desperately hoping someone can give them answers about his fate. Dan Van Voorhis has been missing since February 27, 2011, according Kerry Malzahn, Van Voorhis' sister. Malzahn said the family held a memorial for him about a year after he vanished.
"Our family knows that he is no longer alive, and we are asking for the community's help in gaining any information regarding the circumstances of his disappearance," Malzahn said. "He lived on Cull Canyon Road."
Although Van Voorhis suffered from mental illness, his family does not believe it had anything to do with his sudden and unexplained disappearance.
Malzahn says once they reported him missing, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office searched the rural area around her brother's home. Her brother's keys, car, cell phone and beloved dogs were all found in his house.
"I think something happened to him," Malzahn told Patch. "I feel someone may have harmed him. We would just like answers."
Sergeant Kenneth Gemmell says the Alameda County Sheriff's Office recently posted a flyer asking the community for information about Van Voorhis' disappearance.
"We released the flyer because of the four year anniversary of the missing person report," Gemmell said.
Van Voorhis was 40-years-old at the time of his disappearance. Anyone with information about Van Voorhis is asked to contact the Alameda County Sheriff's Office at (510) 667-7721.
