Obit: Daniel L. Brenner L.A. County judge killed while crossing the street in Pico-Robertson

A Los Angeles County judge who also was a recognized expert in communications law was killed Monday when he was struck by a vehicle while crossing a West L.A. street, police said.

The judge, identified as Daniel L. Brenner by a court spokeswoman, was walking across Beverwil Drive near Pico Boulevard about 6 p.m. when a driver heading north struck him, said Los Angeles police Officer Tony Im.

The driver remained at the scene and is not under a criminal investigation, Im said. Brenner was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was 64.

Brenner was not using the crosswalk, LAPD Sgt. Benjamin Zucker said.

"He was a brilliant judge and lawyer and a beloved friend to many," said Judge Carolyn Kuhl, the presiding judge of the L.A. County Superior Court. "His death is a terrible loss for his family and the court."

Gov. Jerry Brown appointed Brenner to the bench in 2012, and the jurist had most recently heard civil matters in the Chatsworth Courthouse, according to court spokeswoman Mary Hearn.

At the time of his appointment, Brenner had been a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Hogan Lovells LLP after spending about 17 years as the vice president of the regulatory department at the National Cable and Telecommunications Assn., an industry group.

Brenner had previously served as a top advisor to the chair of the Federal Communications Commission.

"Dan's insightful knowledge of telecommunications law made him a formidable force in public policy during his years leading the legal department at NCTA," said Michael Powell, president and CEO of the cable and telecom group.

"A prominent and distinguished member of the federal communications bar, Dan was a key staffer and advisor to two FCC chairmen during a time of immense change," he added.

Many praised Brenner for his sharp legal mind as well as his comedic talent.

For several years, Brenner performed stand-up comedy in clubs across the country and even taught a comedy course at UCLA Extension. He told The Times in 1991 that lawyers and comedians faced similar tasks: using language to be persuasive.

Brenner had earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stanford University, and he graduated from Stanford Law School. Following law school, he was a clerk for U.S. District Court Judge William Byrne Jr.

During his career, Brenner wrote two legal textbooks and served as an adjunct faculty member at Georgetown University Law Center, Washington College of Law at American University and Cardozo Law School. He previously served as a faculty member at UCLA's law school and was a lecturer at USC's Gould School of Law, according to his USC biography

SONOMA COUNTY — A member of UC Berkeley’s legal team died Sunday after being hit by a car in a hit-and-run crash near Guerneville, authorities said.

The Sonoma County Coroner’s Office confirmed Monday that 59-year-old Christopher Patti, the campus’ chief legal counsel, died Sunday morning. He was stopped on his bike on the right shoulder of westbound Highway 116 around 8:45 a.m. when a BMW slid onto the shoulder and hit him, according to a statement by the California Highway Patrol.

“I speak for the Berkeley community in saying how grief-stricken we are at Chris Patti’s untimely death,” UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ said in a statement. “He was an extraordinary colleague. He loved the university, and he had a deep core of integrity that motivated everything he did. He was smart, he was compassionate. He was everything you wanted the counsel of the campus to be. We offer our sympathy to his family and his friends for this tragic loss.”

Patti joined the university in 2010. Before that, he worked for two decades in the general counsel’s office at UC’s Office of the President.

“Chris was a wonderful colleague and friend who cared about people and doing the right thing. He was an extraordinary lawyer to whom we all turned for advice and counsel. His loss is unfathomable,” Charles F. Robinson, general counsel and vice president of legal affairs with UC, said in a statement.

The CHP on Monday identified 28-year-old Jonathan Ritter, of Rio Nido/Monte Rio, as a person of interest. The driver of the vehicle that hit Patti continued west on Highway 116, then turned around and went back past the scene in the eastbound direction, the agency said.

Police want to find out if Ritter was driving the car.

Officer Jon Sloat told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat that Patti was about 20 feet to the right of the highway, and that evidence at the scene indicates the vehicle drove fast and perhaps recklessly.

“He was well off the road,” Sloat told the Press-Democrat. “He should have been safe.”

Patti earned his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and his law degree from the University of Virginia. Before joining UC, he worked as a litigation associate in San Francisco. He is survived by a wife and two sons.

In March 1988, the FBI arrived at 546 Bliss Ave, Pittsburg CA, his name FBI Agent Frank Doyle Jr., his message was to sell my my million dollar operation before I was killed.  

Little did I realize his connections to the bombing case with Judi Bari, that leads to the attempt on the life of an IRS Agent, and the murder of Police Officer Lester Garnier and Safeway Manager Cynthia Kempf.

Southern Pacific, my cabinet shop and moving lumber from the North Coast to the Bay Area.

Pacific my story introduces a murder case in Concord CA.

(a) Any agency that owns or licenses computerized data that includes personal information shall disclose any breach of the security of the system following discovery or notification of the breach in the security of the data to any resident of California whose unencrypted personal information was, or is reasonably believed to have been, acquired by an unauthorized person. The disclosure shall be made in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay, consistent with the legitimate needs of law enforcement, as provided in subdivision (c), or any measures necessary to determine the scope of the breach and restore the reasonable integrity of the data system.

(b) Any agency that maintains computerized data that includes personal information that the agency does not own shall notify the owner or licensee of the information of any breach of the security of the data immediately following discovery, if the personal information was, or is reasonably believed to have been, acquired by an unauthorized person.

(c) The notification required by this section may be delayed if a law enforcement agency determines that the notification will impede a criminal investigation. The notification required by this section shall be made after the law enforcement agency determines that it will not compromise the investigation.

(d) Any agency that is required to issue a security breach notification pursuant to this section shall meet all of the following requirements:

(1) The security breach notification shall be written in plain language, shall be titled “Notice of Data Breach,” and shall present the information described in paragraph (2) under the following headings: “What Happened,” “What Information Was Involved,” “What We Are Doing,” “What You Can Do,” and “For More Information.” Additional information may be provided as a supplement to the notice.

(A) The format of the notice shall be designed to call attention to the nature and significance of the information it contains.

(B) The title and headings in the notice shall be clearly and conspicuously displayed.

(C) The text of the notice and any other notice provided pursuant to this section shall be no smaller than 10-point type.

A thunderous blast ripped through a Wells Fargo Bank branch in downtown Walnut Creek yesterday, injuring an employee and a pedestrian struck by flying debris. Authorities termed it an accident.
Fire investigators were focusing on a second-floor boiler as the likely cause of the blast. Authorities and bank employees said the boiler had been repaired about an hour before the explosion.

"It was a big boom," said bank manager Nancy Methlie as she stood with a group of Wells Fargo employees not far from the intersection of Bonanza and North Main streets where the bank is located. "It was like you could feel it everywhere in the building."

The explosion occurred at 3:51 p.m., blowing out windows around the building and throwing a large metal duct grille across Bonanza Street where it struck a man. He was taken to Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Walnut Creek with injuries to his shoulder and knee.

A bank employee who was in a room adjacent to the boiler at the time of the blast was also taken to the hospital for symptoms of shock. But officials described both victims' injuries as minor.
Bank patron Alex Utal said the explosion knocked panels off the walls inside the bank. "I thought someone had thrown something against the building," he said.

Shannon Rogers, an employee at Athletic Outpost across from the bank, felt the explosion shake the building while she was working.

"It reeked of gas," she said. "A big metal piece flew off and hit the piano store across the street."
Other bank employees said the building quickly filled with heavy steam or smoke but officials said there was no fire inside following the blast.

Damage was heaviest on the second floor where the suspect boiler was located.

''Earlier in the day, repairs were being made to the boiler," said Contra Costa Fire Capt. Larry Thude. "The repair crew left around 2 or 2:30 p.m."

Authorities said only about 10 people, including employees and patrons, were in the bank when the explosion occurred. A gas line to the bank was immediately shut off but several neighboring businesses were evacuated as a precaution.
Police cordoned off a four-block area around the bank, snarling traffic in the already heavily congested downtown area.
Wells Fargo was planning to send its own security people to the scene to secure the bank, said bank market president Andrew Mastorakis.
Mastorakis said there had been no threats made against the bank and that all evidence pointed to an explosion in the boiler. Fire officials and police were expected to remain at the scene to establish an official cause of the blast. Engineers from the bank and the city were assessing structural damage to the building last night.
Lance Berg, a Wells Fargo spokesman in San Francisco, said customers in Walnut Creek should use Wells Fargo's branch on South Broadway until the branch on North Main reopens.

Craig Conway

Craig Conway has enjoyed one of the most distinguished and successful careers in the technology industry. As president and chief executive officer, Conway has led several technology companies to success including most recently, PeopleSoft. Alan Hassenfeld
Director, Hasbro, Inc.

Alan Hassenfeld is a director of Hasbro, a worldwide leader in children's and family leisure time entertainment with $2.9 billion in revenues and an impressive blue-chip portfolio of familiar and popular brand names such as PLAYSKOOL, TONKA, MILTON BRADLEY, and PARKER BROTHERS. Hassenfeld began his career at Hasbro in 1970. He was appointed vice president of marketing and sales in 1978, became the president of the company in 1984, and received the titles of chairman and CEO in 1989. In May 2003, he passed on the responsibilities of CEO in order to fully concentrate on his position as chairman and served as chairman until February 2008. Hassenfeld sits on the board of the Salesforce Foundation as well as Hasbro's two philanthropic divisions, the Hasbro Charitable Trust and the Hasbro Children's Foundation. He is the former chairman of the Right Now! Coalition and Admiral of Rhode Island Commodores (a governor-appointed business advisory group). Colin Powell

General Colin Powell is a retired four star general and served for 35 years in the United States Army. Sanford Robertson
Principal, Francisco Partners

Sanford Robertson pioneered the creation of West Coast technology banking as an industry in the late 1960s and has remained one of the industry's most renowned participants. He served as vice president and director at Smith Barney before founding a firm that later became Montgomery Securities. In 1978, he founded Robertson, Stephens & Co, one of the most significant underwriters of IPOs, mergers, and acquisitions. After selling the company in 1998, he founded Francisco Partners, the world's largest technology-focused private equity fund. Robertson has had significant financing involvement in over 500 growth technology companies, including 3Com (NASDAQ: COMS), America Online (NYSE: AOL), Applied Materials (NASDAQ: AMAT), Ascend, Dell Computer (NASDAQ: DELL), E*Trade (NYSE: ET), Siebel, and Sun (NASDAQ: SUNW). John V. Roos
Former U.S. Ambassador to Japan

John Roos is a former United States Ambassador to Japan and a former technology lawyer. Before accepting the ambassadorship from President Barack Obama, Roos was the CEO of Silicon Valley-based law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.
Roos served as the U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 2009 to 2013, a historic period in U.S.-Japan relations where he played a key role in managing the relationship through major transitions of government. Roos led the American mission to support Japan's response to the devastating 9.0 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis on March 11, 2011. In October 2011, citing his tireless and effective leadership after March 11, the Department of State awarded Roos the prestigious Sue E. Cobb 2011 Award for Exemplary Diplomatic Service.
Prior to his ambassadorship, Roos served as Chief Executive Officer and Senior Partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, the leading law firm in the U.S. in the representation of technology, life sciences, and emerging growth companies. There he helped lead his firm during the waves of innovation in Silicon Valley, from the growth of software and communications, to the Internet Age, to the emergence of biotechnology, clean technology and renewable energy, to the social media revolution.
Roos grew up in San Francisco and attended Stanford University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with Honors and Distinction, and Stanford Law School, earning his Juris Doctor in 1980, achieving Order of the Coif. Throughout his career, Roos has been active in public service, serving on a public school board in California from 1991 to 1999. Prior to becoming Ambassador to Japan, Roos served on the Stanford School of Education Dean's Advisory Board and on the Law School Dean's Advisory Council. He was elected to membership in the Stanford Associates for his long-standing volunteer service to the University.

Larry Tomlinson

Robin L. Washington
Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Gilead Sciences Inc.

Washington joined Gilead in 2008 and is currently Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer where she oversees the Global Finance and Information Technology organizations. Washington was previously Chief Financial Officer of Hyperion Solutions, which was acquired by Oracle Corporation in March 2007. Prior to that, Washington served in a number of executive positions with PeopleSoft, most recently in the role of Senior Vice President and Corporate Controller.

Maynard Webb is chairman of Yahoo! Inc and a director at Everwise and VISA. He has more than 30 years of experience developing and leading high-growth companies. Webb served as chief executive officer for LiveOps from 2006 to 2011. Prior to LiveOps, he was the chief operating officer at eBay from 2002 to 2006 and was responsible for the company-wide implementation of all business strategies. Previously, he served as president of eBay Technologies, where he was responsible for all engineering and technical operations at eBay, including product and technology strategy, engineering, architecture, site operations, and customer support.
Prior to joining eBay, Webb was senior vice president and chief information officer at Gateway, where he contributed to the company's rapid expansion and Internet-enabled business operations. Susan Wojcicki
CEO, YouTube

Susan Wojcicki is CEO of YouTube, the world’s most popular digital video platform used by a billion people across the globe to access information, share video, and shape culture. An early champion of online video, Wojcicki was instrumental in Google's 2006 acquisition of YouTube. She now oversees YouTube's content and business operations, engineering, and product development.
Prior to joining YouTube in February 2014, Wojcicki was senior vice president of Advertising & Commerce at Google, where she oversaw the design and engineering of AdWords, AdSense, DoubleClick, and Google Analytics. She joined Google in 1999 as the company's first marketing manager and led the initial development of several key consumer products, including Google Images and Google Books. In 2002, Wojcicki began working on Google’s advertising products and over the next 12 years she led teams that helped define the vision and direction of Google’s monetization platforms.
Wojcicki graduated with honors from Harvard University, holds a master's in Economics from University of California, Santa Cruz, and an MBA from UCLA.
